Unlike anywhere else in the world (or at least not like Australia) huge shopping centres abound with both Coles, Woolworths etc.
When you first arrive, I would encourage you to visit Essalunga on the way from Lucca to Ponte Seraglio. It is like a bit Australian supermarket with everything including wine and beer.
In Italy you will find smaller supermarkets in most larger villages. Conrad’s is the most popular for the smaller ones. There is a Conad’s just 10 minutes walk towards La Villa. Just on the right hand side and down on the river. You will see signs on the La Villa Road. They stock a great variety of cheese, bread, fresh fruit and veggies and almost anything you would need.
Just before you reach Conad’s you will see a Petrol Station. There is also a car cleaning bay beside it, but we could not figure out how to use it. Perhaps we needed more time or find someone who speaks italian and english to give you a hand.
Should you need something from a hardware shop. There is one in Fornoli on the right hand side going down stream. A low set building with the usual brooms, pots etc out the front. Also in La Villa there are a couple of similar shops that sell everything from a tea towel, clothes baskets, vases and the odd hardware stuff.
The supermarket has a very good selection of wines. However, if you wanted something more boutique or grappa, spirits etc. There is a Specialised wine shop in La Villa on the right hand side. In the block amongst everything else. I think there is a gelato shop next door. If you walk along the skinny side of the street, you will come to it.
